Navigation

This compass bearing is the most often used pieces of navigation used in Scotland and one of the most important things to know before heading out to Ben Nevis.
From the summit 227° for 200 meters, then hold dead steady to 296° for just over a 1Km will take you to safe ground and the pony track

You may ask your self how simple they sound, but they are all to easily forgotten and so easy to make a distance error, as the night draws in and the cornices loom on the North-East face, a sense of danger and fear from the vertical drops just meters away and the exit chutes of the Glen Nevis gullies approach the battle begins, to get your self safely of this stormy ice covered summit you start to remember those tails of tragedy talked about in the local inn, thinking to your self how simple those bearings sounded from the guide book. But be warned the summit of Ben Nevis has an attitude and is all to often unforgiving to the wayward climber.
